Monuments of Culture in the city of Lezha
Lezha, (Lissus antic) is proud to have its birth at the same time with other antic cities like Durres, Apollonia, Shkodra, Berati, Butrinti and before most of the European cities. All these cities together make the cradle of the Albanian civilization of the ancient Albania. The city had still a great historical importance during the Middle Ages, as the city was scene to the union of the Albanians under Scanderbeg, and as the site where Scanderbeg himself died and was buried. Lezha has also a notable contribute in the new ages for the progress and modernization of the district and all the country. Lezha displays to every single visitor, foreigner or not, unical values of archeology, monumental and historical. Akrolissi (sec. 11 b.C.) the most ancient traces of the civilization in Lezha. Lissusi (385 p.k) the antic developed city of a special archeological and historical importance. The Castle (started on the 4th century and ended on year 1521) is the most prominent monumental value of the city. The Obelisc (1968) is a monumental work in the city center who revives the union of the Albanian princes in the Council of Lezha on 2 March 1444. The Grave of National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti Scanderbeg (1981) build on the ruins of th Shen Kolli Church to honor the place where Scanderbeg was buried on 17 January 1468. The House of Mlikaj (1910) is a typichal building of the ctadel. Once it was the Museum of teh city. The Old Bridge (1926), the oldest bridge built on River Drin. Lezha offers to its visitors also its cultural and artistic values. The Public Library, (2001), the life of the public starts much earlier, but the new building offers a good fond of books in Albanian and other languages and many other services. The Palace of Culture (1983) is an important center of many cultural, artistic or scientific activities. The Gallery of Arts (inside the Palace of Culture), is a center for the exhibitions of the Lezha authors and more and has a continued activity. The “Besëlidhja” Stadium and different other sportive terrains where activities of a national character take place. Besides these archaeological and cultural values our city offers to the visitor the wonderful natural beauties who range from mountain to seaand who would make somebody's stay in Lezha pleasant.
